Split by income

Split household expenses by income

When one of you earns more, splitting everything in half asks more of the one who earns less. Set the split to match what you agreed instead.

Type two incomes, get the shares

Marco and Elena split 45/55. To get there, open the household's split, choose By income and type what each of you earns. The shares fill in, in proportion. The incomes are only weights on that screen, and only the percentages are saved.

Use monthly pay or yearly pay, as long as you use the same one for both. Or skip the calculator and type the percentages you agreed, 60/40 or anything else.

HouseholdExample
The household's split: Marco 45% and Elena 55%, used this month, with a change taking effect from next month.

What 45/55 does to a grocery run

On a $120.00 shared grocery bill, Marco's 45% is $54.00 and Elena's 55% is $66.00. Money is handled in whole cents, so when a total does not divide evenly, the odd cent goes to one person by a fixed rule and the shares still add up to the bill.

Something that belongs to one of you comes off the receipt first, with its share of the tax, and only the rest is divided by the shares.

When your incomes change

Change the split and it applies from the next month. Months you already closed keep the split they were posted under, so last spring does not get rewritten by a raise this fall.

Splitting by income is part of Free, which covers a household of two.
