Subscriptions and Refunds

Updated October 28, 2026

What the plans cost, who takes the money, what happens if you stop paying, and how to get money back.

Where checkout runs

Plans are bought on the web, in the Android app through Google Play, or in the iPhone app through the App Store. On the public service, web checkout takes real cards. On evenhearth.dev, the early-access test service, checkout runs in Stripe's test mode: it takes test cards only, and nobody can be charged there.

The plans

A plan is bought for a household, not per person. Prices are in Canadian dollars, before sales tax. On the web, GST/HST is added at checkout at the rate for your billing address. In an app, the store shows its price before you buy, and adds and collects the sales tax that applies.

Paid plans, how many households each covers, and their prices
PlanMonthlyYearlyFounders2 years
EvenHearth Plus1 household$8.99$79$79
EvenHearth Plus2 households$12.99$109$109
EvenHearth Plus3 households$14.99$129$129

Founders is two years for the price of one. It is billed once every two years, and when the two years are up it renews at the same plan's yearly price. Only 100 Founders subscriptions will be sold, and only on the web. Moving a Founders subscription up a plan keeps the Founders price for the new plan; you pay the difference for the time left, straight away.

Changing plan. On the web, moving up takes effect immediately, and the difference for the rest of the period is charged then. Moving down takes effect at your next renewal, with no partial refund for the period you are in. In an app, you change plan through the store, which sets when the change takes effect and what it charges or credits.

What stays free

Free is one household of your own, for two people. On it, entering expenses, splits, categories, month close, settle-up, search and export are unlimited, and the ledger is kept forever. Receipt reading works from a bank of 5 scans that refills by one every 2 days, and a scan that fails is given back. Receipt photos are kept 56 days. Trips are free: one active at a time, up to 5 people, and each closes to new expenses 90 days after it starts, with settle-up left open.

Projects, budgets, charts over time and recurring bills need a paid plan. So does a third person in the household, another active trip, or a second household of your own while the first is still in use.

Free will not shrink. Features added later may go to the paid plans, but what is listed here stays on Free.

The EvenHearth Plus trial

A household gets six weeks (42 days) of EvenHearth Plus when its owner finishes the getting-started tour or it records its first shared expense, whichever comes first. There is no card to enter and nothing is charged. Receipt photos taken during the trial are kept 56 days, as on Free, and for good if the household subscribes within them. When it ends, the household carries on under Free. Each person gets one trial, once, however many accounts they make. Buy a plan on the web during the trial and your card is saved, then first charged when the trial ends; cancel before that and nothing is charged. Buy one in an app and the store charges you then; on Google Play, the days of the trial you had left are added before the first renewal.

Who you pay

On the web, we are the seller. Payment is taken by Stripe, our payment processor, and plans are sold only to billing addresses in Canada.

  • We never see your card number. You enter it with Stripe, and Stripe keeps it. We hold the customer and subscription references Stripe gives us, and which plan they pay for.
  • A purchase from anywhere else is cancelled as soon as we see the billing address, and the charge is refunded.

In the apps, you pay the store. A plan bought in the Android app is paid to Google Play, and one bought in the iPhone app to the App Store, under the store's own terms. The store keeps your payment details. We receive a reference to the purchase, its plan, its state and its dates, never your card or your store account's details. Plans are offered only in the store's Canadian storefront, and the apps do not sell Founders.

A household is paid for in one place at a time: a household covered by a plan bought on the web cannot buy one in an app, and the reverse.

Cancelling

Cancel a plan bought on the web any time under Manage billing on the Plan screen, on the website. Cancel a plan bought in an app in the store: under Subscriptions in Google Play on Android, or under Subscriptions in your Apple account on iPhone. Cancelling stops the next renewal. It is not a refund of the period you are in.

You keep the plan until the end of the period you have already paid for. Nothing is switched off early.

You can cancel a renewal at any time, before or after the renewal date. Before a yearly or Founders plan renews, we email you between 30 and 50 days ahead with the date, the price it renews at, and how to cancel. A monthly plan renews without a reminder, and cancelling it stops the next charge.

Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Asking to delete your EvenHearth account does, for every plan bought on the web, Founders included: the plan stops renewing straight away and runs to the end of the period you paid for, and recovering the account does not start it again. See Deleting your account. A Google Play plan stops renewing when the account is erased. An App Store plan keeps renewing until you cancel it in the store.

Refunds

Refunds on web purchases are ours to give, because we took the payment, and a refund goes back to the card you paid with.

  • After a yearly or Founders renewal. If you cancel after the plan has renewed, you can have it end now and the unused days refunded, pro rata. Write to us at the address below, and the refund is made within 15 days.
  • A purchase from outside the sale area is refunded in full, as soon as we see the billing address.
  • Anything else, such as a charge you did not expect, write to us and we will look at it. We answer every request within 15 days.

Plans bought in an app are refunded by the store, under its rules, and you ask the store. Apple decides refunds of App Store purchases, and we cannot give one ourselves. On Google Play, if you cancel a yearly plan after it has renewed, you can also write to us to have it end now and the unused days refunded, pro rata, within 15 days. For a yearly plan bought in the App Store, ask Apple.

When you buy a plan, we email you a copy of what you agreed to: the plan, its price, how it renews, and how to cancel.

Rights you have regardless of any of this

Nothing above removes a right the law gives you. Depending on where you live, that may include a cooling-off period after purchase, a remedy where a service is not as described, or a right under consumer protection law that cannot be contracted away. Where this page and that law disagree, the law wins.

In Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta, for example, you can cancel a plan bought online within 7 days of receiving the copy of the agreement if it did not tell you what the law requires, or within 30 days of buying if we never sent you a copy.

Price changes

If the price of a plan changes, the change applies only from a renewal, never to a period you have already paid for, and only once we have emailed you between 30 and 60 days before that renewal. If we did not email you in time, your price stays the same until a later renewal. You can cancel without charge because of it.

For a plan bought in an app, the store may also tell you and apply its own consent rules to a price change: it may ask you to agree to the new price, and if you do not, it ends the plan at that renewal. The notice above applies too.

What happens if you stop paying

Everything you recorded stays readable and exportable, and settle-up always works. Amounts, dates, who paid, how it was split and what was settled are kept on every plan for as long as the household exists. None of it expires, and none of it is moved behind a payment.

Nothing changes while a failing card can still be retried. Once the plan has actually ended:

  • One household stays free. Each household's Owner keeps one household they created free: the one they pick, or until they pick, the oldest. Free's rules apply to it: members above two stay and keep adding entries, and nobody new can join until it is back at two or paid for again.
  • Every other household the plan covered is frozen. No new entries, members or trips. It stays readable, entries already there can be corrected, export works, and settle-up and month close stay open, so money owed between people is never held until somebody pays us.
  • Any member can subscribe to unfreeze a household, not only the person whose plan ended.
  • Open trips are not closed, but Free’s rules apply to them: a trip closes to new expenses 90 days after it started, with settle-up left open, and a frozen household takes no new expenses. Budgets are hidden and kept, and come back if you subscribe again. Charts over time and bill reminders stop, and receipt reading falls back to the scan bank.

The one thing we delete is the photograph of a receipt, or a PDF kept with an entry. On Free it is kept 56 days; on a paid plan, for as long as the household exists. The entry it produced stays either way.

Photos taken while you were paying stay kept. A plan ending never deletes photos you already had. Every receipt on Free shows the date its photo will be deleted, from the day it is scanned, so there is time to save a copy.

One subscription covers the household

Everyone in a covered household gets what the plan includes, on one payment by one person. A trip’s guests use that trip’s paid features too, but a guest’s receipt scans draw on their own household’s plan or scan bank, never the organizer’s. Nobody else in the household is charged and nobody else can be. Any member can be the one who pays, and a plan can only cover households its payer belongs to.

The person who bought it is the only one who can cancel it, because the subscription is theirs. If they leave a household, that household stops being covered, and the rules above for a plan that has ended apply to it.

Cancelling and leaving end differently. Cancelling keeps the plan running until the end of the period you have already paid for. Leaving the household ends the plan for that household straight away, because a plan only covers households its payer is in.
