Terms of Service

Version 2026-11-06 · Updated November 6, 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Maliko Labs Inc., which operates EvenHearth. “We” in these terms means Maliko Labs Inc.

Questions about these terms go to support@maliko.ca.

1. What EvenHearth is, and what a settlement figure is not

EvenHearth records spending that people share, such as a household's groceries, a trip's fuel or a renovation's lumber. You photograph a receipt, EvenHearth reads it into a draft, and you correct and confirm that draft. Each line is personal to one person, shared on your household's split, or allocated the way you choose. The app records who paid. At the end of a period it tells your household who owes whom.

A settlement figure is a calculation, not a debt. It is arithmetic on what the members of your household entered. EvenHearth cannot know whether a receipt was real, whether an item was allocated the way you actually agreed, or whether the person who marked a payment as made actually made it. A figure here is not an authoritative record of a legal debt, not proof that a debt exists or was paid, and not something built to be relied on by a court, a lender, an accountant, or a tax authority. If your household disagrees about a number, the disagreement is between the people in it, and EvenHearth takes no side.

EvenHearth is a bookkeeping aid. It is not a bank, a payment service, a lender, an accounting firm, a tax preparation service, a financial or legal adviser, a mediator or arbitrator, or an authoritative legal debt ledger. Nothing it shows you is advice.

2. Accounts, Guests and Seats

Two terms are used throughout.

A Seat is the financial identity inside a household or a venture. The Seat holds the share of the split, the allocations, the balance and the history. The arithmetic is done on Seats.

A Principal is whoever signs in. Every Principal is either an Account or a Guest. A Principal may control a Seat, but the Seat holds the financial record and does not stop existing when a person stops signing in.

An Account is verified and lasting. Sign in on a new device and your history follows you.

A Guest is lighter: a chosen name and a sign-in held on one device, with no email address of its own (an invitation sent by email keeps the address it went to, but it is never a sign-in), able to reach only the household or venture it was invited to. A Guest can never be an Owner or an Admin. Guests accept these terms too, when they join, and we record the version everyone accepted and when.

Because a Guest's sign-in lives on one device, Guest access may not survive a reinstall, a device reset or a lost phone. Getting back in runs through the people who invited you. Creating an Account makes your access lasting, and a Guest can become an Account without losing history. When that happens, the Guest record is kept for the household's history and its sign-in is removed.

A Reserved Seat is a Seat for someone who has not joined. A household Owner can create one before an invitee signs up, so the household can be set up without waiting. It carries a name, often copied from the Owner's private Contacts, and a share of the split, and it is shown to the household as “Invited”. It has no sign-in and no app access. The person named has not accepted these terms and is not bound by them unless and until they claim the Seat. Entries can be recorded against that Seat in the meantime, and other members' balances will be computed from them.

If you create a Reserved Seat for someone, you are the one putting their name and their share into a ledger other people can read. By creating one, you confirm that you have a reason to include that person in the household's records and that you intend to invite them, or, for a younger child, that you are their parent or guardian. What is held about them, and how they can have their name removed, is in the Privacy Policy.

You are responsible for what happens under your credentials. Keep them to yourself, and tell us if you believe they have been used without your permission.

3. How old you have to be

You must be at least 13 to create an Account, claim an Invitation, or claim a Venture. If you live in Quebec, you must be at least 14, because Quebec law asks a parent's consent for anyone younger. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you need a parent's or guardian's permission to use EvenHearth. Only an adult may buy a plan, create a household, or be a household's Owner or Admin.

A younger child can be part of a household only as a Reserved Seat that a parent or guardian who is the household's Owner or Admin creates and manages. The child never signs in and accepts nothing; the parent or guardian is responsible for what is recorded against the Seat.

Guests give no email address and cannot be age-screened by any means we control, so the rule sits on the person doing the inviting: if you are an Owner or an Admin, do not invite a Guest under that age.

We do not check who is an adult, so the rule sits on the person doing the choosing: if you are an Owner or an Admin, make only adults Owners or Admins.

EvenHearth does not ask for a date of birth. When you create an Account, or claim an Invitation or a Venture, you confirm that you meet the age in this section, and your acceptance of these terms is our record of that confirmation.

If we learn that someone under that age has an Account or a Guest place, we tell the household's Owner and close it the way any Account is deleted: the person's details are removed and the household's ledger stays intact.

4. What your household sees

EvenHearth is a shared ledger. An entry you record into a household or a venture is visible to the other people in that household or venture. Entries you mark as personal are seen only by you, and by the member who paid for one if that is someone else; other members do not see them at all. An entry in a private trip is seen only by the people on that trip. A venture's Guests see that venture and nothing else, not the household behind it.

Before you put something into a shared space, remember that the people you share it with can see it. That includes what is printed on a receipt you photograph.

5. Receipts and reading

When you photograph a receipt, EvenHearth reads it and shows you what it read before anything is posted. Automated reading is imperfect: totals can be misread, lines missed, dates guessed wrong. Review the draft before you confirm it. What gets posted is what you confirmed, and once it is posted it is your figure, not ours.

EvenHearth is a bookkeeping aid, not tax, accounting, legal or financial advice.

6. EvenHearth never moves money

Nothing in EvenHearth sends, receives, holds, or transfers money. There is no bank connection, no card, no payment rail, no automated transfer. A payment recorded in EvenHearth is a note that two people say a payment happened somewhere else: one marks it paid, the other marks it received. EvenHearth is not a bank, a money-services business, or a payment processor, and a ledger entry here is not proof that money changed hands.

When you record a payment you may attach an Interac e-transfer security question and its answer, so the other person can release a transfer they are receiving from you somewhere else. It is a note you typed for them. EvenHearth does not use it, does not send anything with it, and is not a party to the transfer. How it is stored and who can see it is in the Privacy Policy. Read it before you type one.

Sections 9 to 15 describe fees. Nothing in them changes this section. When EvenHearth charges you, it charges you for software; your household's settlement money still never passes through it.

7. Acceptable use

Use EvenHearth lawfully and use it as built. Do not probe or circumvent its access boundaries, work around its rate limits or its upload and storage limits, use it to store unlawful material, or try to reach households, ventures, or records you were not invited to. Do not use another person's Seat or credentials. We may suspend or close access that does any of this. The Acceptable Use Policy says the same things at more length.

7.1 Reporting problems, and misuse of it

If you have an Account, you can report a problem with EvenHearth from inside the app or from EvenHearth's bug hunting site. Reporting is a privilege, not a right. Misusing it can cost you the privilege, your badges, and your Account. What counts as misuse is listed below.

How reporting works.

  • Accounts only. A Guest cannot file a report.
  • An allowance that grows. You can file 2 reports in any 24 hours to start. Each of your reports that we verify adds 1 to that number, up to 10. The form shows how many you have left and, when you have none, when the next one becomes possible.
  • A verdict on every report we look at. We mark a report verified, a duplicate, not a bug, or misuse. A verified report stays open until what it describes is fixed, and then we mark it fixed; every other verdict closes it. You can see your own reports, what we decided about each, and whether it has been fixed.
  • The board. Reports go on a board that every signed-in bug hunter can read and search: the summary and the details you wrote, the area and where you saw it, where the report is (waiting, being fixed, fixed, and so on), how many people have it, and the day it was filed. Your name, your Account, your address, your household, the screen you were on, your browser and your photos and videos never appear on it. A report goes on the board only when the form you filed it from says so beside Send. We may take any report off the board, and a report we mark as misuse comes off it. Write the summary and details as something other people will read (see item 4 of the misuse list below).
  • “I have this issue.” On an open report on the board you can say you have it too, once per report and never on your own. It tells us how many people a problem reaches, and we treat a report more seriously the more people have it. The count is shown; who said so is not.
  • Photos and videos. You can attach up to 4 to your own open report, from the app's report form or the bug hunting site: photos (JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 10 MB each) and one video (MP4, MOV or WebM, up to 15 MB). We refuse files that are not what they claim to be, and remove location, camera and device details before keeping one. Only you and the people who work on EvenHearth can see them. They never appear on the board, they are kept as long as the report is, and we may delete one.
  • Badges. Verified reports earn badges on your Account: First find at 1, Five finds at 5 and Twenty-five finds at 25. We may also give a Founding tester badge by hand. A badge stays on your Account even if we later change the verdict that earned it. It goes only if we remove it under this section, or if your Account is deleted.
  • Rewards are ours to offer, and are never owed. Badges have no cash value and cannot be sold, exchanged or transferred. Maliko Labs Inc. may choose to reward reports or badges, for example with a period of paid access to EvenHearth. When it does, the reward is announced with its own terms: who qualifies, what is given, and for how long. Nothing is owed for a report or a badge until such terms exist, and then only what they say. No reward is offered today.
  • No promise of an answer. Filing a report does not oblige us to reply, to fix what it describes, or to credit you for it.

Signing in to the bug hunting site hands your app sign-in over to it: it gets a session of its own that ends when the app sign-in it came from ends, and you can see and end it with your other sessions.

What counts as misuse. Any of these:

  1. Filing a report you know is false, or inventing one, including to earn a verdict, a larger allowance or a badge.
  2. Flooding: filing the same problem again and again, or splitting one problem into many reports.
  3. Harassing, threatening or abusive content, aimed at anybody.
  4. Putting other people's personal information in a report, a photo or a video beyond what is needed to describe the problem. Remember that a report's summary and details are read by other bug hunters on the board.
  5. Filing by script, bot or any other automated means.
  6. Testing against a household, venture or Account you were not invited to, or going further than you need to show a security problem. Show it; do not use it. Do not read, change or keep data that is not yours.
  7. Getting around the allowance or a ban, for example with a second Account.
  8. Trading, selling or coordinating verdicts or badges with anybody.

Who decides, and what can happen. Maliko Labs Inc. reserves the right to exercise its judgement on every matter related to misuse of the reporting system: whether a report or a pattern of reports is misuse, and what to do about it. A person makes that decision; nothing happens automatically. It can be any of these, alone or together:

  • marking reports as misuse, which is recorded against your Account;
  • stopping your Account filing reports, for a while or permanently;
  • removing badges gained through misuse;
  • suspending your Account;
  • permanently closing your Account and deleting its information.

A ban on reporting stops reporting and nothing else: the rest of EvenHearth keeps working for you unless we also suspend or close your Account.

What deleting its information reaches. Closing an Account for misuse deletes it the way any Account is deleted, which the Privacy Policy describes. Two limits apply, and they are the same ones section 8 states. Shared entries that other members' balances were computed from stay in their ledger with your identifying details removed, because deleting them would rewrite other people's records. And we keep our verdicts on the reports you filed, with nothing that identifies you.

Asking us to look again. If we stop your Account filing reports, remove a badge, or suspend or close your Account under this section, you can write to us within 30 days of the decision and ask us to look at it again. We answer within 30 days.

8. Leaving, and what stays behind

You can export your household's records at any time from Settings. You can stop using EvenHearth whenever you like.

You can delete your account in Settings, or ask us to by email. Deleting your account explains both, and what deletion reaches and what it does not.

Leaving a household does not erase the arithmetic. If a household keeps using its ledger after you go, the shared entries you took part in stay in that ledger, because other members' balances were computed from them and removing them would rewrite other people's records. What can go is you: your identifying details are removed rather than the arithmetic rewritten, as the Privacy Policy describes. Your personal entries stay too, with your name removed, seen by no one but a member who paid for one.

Ventures settle separately. A venture's money never rides the monthly household settlement. Settling up happens twice: once in the venture, once in the household ledger. Leaving or closing one does not settle the other, and a balance you owe in a venture is not cancelled by a household close.

9. What EvenHearth costs

EvenHearth has a free plan and paid plans. Section 14 lists them and their prices, and sections 10 to 14 say how paid plans work. Paid plans are bought on the web, in the Android app through Google Play, or in the iPhone app through the App Store. On the web, the card you pay with is typed into Stripe's checkout, never into ours. In an app, you pay the store. We never hold card numbers, bank credentials or payment tokens.

On the public service, checkout takes real cards. On evenhearth.dev, the early-access test service, checkout runs in Stripe's test mode: it takes test cards only, and nobody can be charged there.

10. How paid plans were introduced

Introducing paid plans was named in advance as a material change to these terms, and this version is that change. It came in this order:

  1. A new version of this document, with the plan terms filled in.
  2. Notice inside the app, at your next sign-in.
  3. Renewed acceptance: you are asked once, at your next sign-in, to accept the new version, and checkout waits until you do. Your acceptance of that version is recorded against your Principal, the same way the last one was.

Notice is given in the app, because Guests have no email address and the app reaches everyone who accepted this document.

11. What a plan can never gate: your records

Everything you recorded stays readable and exportable, and settle-up always works.

  • Records already entered stay readable at every plan level, including the free one, and including after a subscription lapses or is cancelled.
  • Records already entered stay exportable at every plan level, on the same terms.
  • Settling up and closing a month keep working in every household, paid, free or frozen, so money owed between people is never held until somebody pays us.
  • We will not delete your records because you stopped paying, and we will never ask you to pay in order to read or export something you already put in.

A plan is bought for a household. What it buys is capacity and extra capability: more than one household of your own, more than two people in one, unlimited receipt reading, receipt photos kept past 56 days (photos taken during a free trial keep the free plan's 56 days, and are kept for good if the household subscribes within them), more than one active trip and trips of more than five people, projects, budgets, charts over time, recurring bills, and features we add later. A paid feature may add a new way to look at your ledger. It cannot take away the ledger.

If your subscription lapses: nothing changes while a failing card can still be retried. Once it has ended, each household's Owner keeps one household they created on the free plan (they pick which; until they do, it is the oldest), and every other household the plan covered is frozen: no new entries, members or trips, while reading, correcting an entry, export, settle-up and month close keep working. Any member can subscribe to unfreeze a household. Receipt photos taken while you were paying are kept; photos taken after follow the free plan's 56 days, and deleting a photo never deletes the entry it produced.

12. Where plans are sold

Plans are sold on the web, in the Android app through Google Play, and in the iPhone app through the App Store. Wherever you buy it, the plan is the one these terms describe, and section 11 applies to it.

On the web, this document governs the purchase, and we are the party you paid; Stripe takes the payment for us. You cancel under Manage billing on the Plan screen, on the website. Refunds are ours to give, and the Subscriptions and Refunds page says how to ask for one. Price changes, renewal and taxes follow section 14. Before you pay, you tick a box to accept these terms and the Subscriptions and Refunds page, and we keep which version you accepted with your purchase.

13. Buying in the phone apps

In the Android app, a plan is bought from Google Play, and in the iPhone app from the App Store. The store takes the payment, under its own terms, and charges it to your store account. These terms govern the plan it pays for.

Cancelling. A plan bought in an app is cancelled in the store, not on the Plan screen: under Subscriptions in Google Play on Android, or under Subscriptions in your Apple account on iPhone. It runs to the end of the period already paid for, and then section 11 applies. Deleting the app cancels nothing. Deleting your EvenHearth account stops a Google Play plan's renewals when the account is erased. An App Store plan keeps renewing until you cancel it in the store.

Refunds. Refunds of a store purchase are asked for from the store, and follow its rules. Apple decides refunds of App Store purchases, and we cannot give one ourselves. If you cancel a yearly plan bought on Google Play after it has renewed, you can instead have it end now and the unused days refunded, pro rata, within 15 days: write to us at the address in section 19. For a yearly plan bought in the App Store, ask Apple.

Renewal and price changes. The store renews the plan and charges each renewal. The notices section 14 promises before a yearly renewal and before a price change are sent for a plan bought in an app too, as section 14 sets them, for a price change 30 to 60 days ahead where the store gives us that much notice. The store may also send its own and apply its own consent rules to a price change: it may ask you to agree to the new price, and if you do not, it ends the plan at that renewal.

Changing plan in an app is done through the store, which sets when the change takes effect and what it charges or credits.

The apps do not sell Founders. A household is paid for in one place at a time: a household covered by a plan bought on the web cannot buy one in an app, and one covered by a plan bought in an app cannot buy one on the web.

14. Plans, prices and the free trial

Prices are per household, in Canadian dollars, before sales tax, and plans are sold only to buyers billed in Canada. On the web, a purchase from anywhere else is cancelled as soon as we see the billing address, and the charge is refunded. In an app, plans are offered only in the store's Canadian storefront, and the store shows the price, in Canadian dollars, before you buy.

  • EvenHearth Plus covers one household: $8.99 a month or $79 a year.
  • EvenHearth Plus · 2 households covers two: $12.99 a month or $109 a year.
  • EvenHearth Plus · 3 households covers three: $14.99 a month or $129 a year.
  • Founders is any of the three billed every two years at the yearly price ($79, $109 or $129), then renewing at that plan's yearly price. It is sold on the web only, and only 100 will be sold.

The free plan is one household you created, for two people. Pending invitations count toward the two; trip guests do not. It includes unlimited entries, splits, categories, month close, settle-up, search and export; the ledger kept forever; a bank of 5 receipt scans that refills by one every 2 days, with a failed scan given back; receipt photos and kept PDFs for 56 days; and trips, one active at a time, of up to 5 people, each closing to new expenses 90 days after it starts with settle-up left open. Starting a second free household means archiving or deleting the first. What the free plan includes will not shrink.

The free trial. A household gets EvenHearth Plus for six weeks (42 days). It starts when you finish the getting-started tour, or with the household's first shared expense if that comes first, and the app shows the day it ends. No card is asked for, nothing is charged, and at the end the household carries on under the free plan. Receipt photos taken during the trial are kept 56 days, as on the free plan, and for good if the household subscribes within them. If you buy a plan on the web during the trial, your card is saved at checkout and first charged when the trial ends; cancel before then and nothing is charged. In an app, the store charges you when you buy, even during the trial. On Google Play, the days of the trial you had left are then added before the first renewal.

One trial per person. The free trial is for one person once, not once per Account or per email alias. A trial does not start, and the household stays on the free plan, when you have had one before or have paid for a plan before, or where our checks show that trials are being taken through several Accounts or by automated means. These checks are made automatically. We may also end a trial where we reasonably believe trials are being taken through several Accounts, and suspend the Accounts involved only where trials are clearly being taken by automated means. If a trial was withheld or ended, you can ask us which kind of check decided it and have a person review the decision: write to us at the address in section 19. None of this affects what the free plan includes or the records you keep. What we collect for these checks is set out in section 12 of the Privacy Policy.

Renewal. A plan renews automatically at the end of each month, year or two-year Founders term until you cancel it. You can cancel a renewal at any time, before or after the renewal date. Before a yearly or Founders plan renews, we email you between 30 and 50 days ahead with the date, the price it renews at, and how to cancel; a Founders term renews at the same plan's yearly price. When you buy a plan, we email you a copy of what you agreed to.

Changing plan. On the web, moving up takes effect straight away, and the difference for the time left in the period is charged then. A Founders subscription that moves up keeps the Founders price of the new plan. Moving down takes effect at the next renewal, with no partial refund.

Cancelling. On the web, the plan runs to the end of the period you already paid for, and then section 11 applies. If you cancel a yearly or Founders plan after it has renewed, you can instead have it end now and the unused days refunded, pro rata, within 15 days: write to us at the address in section 19.

Price changes. A new price applies only from a renewal, never to a period you have already paid for, and only once we have emailed you between 30 and 60 days before that renewal. If we did not email you in time, your price stays the same until a later renewal we do give notice for. You can cancel without charge because of a price change.

Taxes. On the web, GST/HST is added at checkout, at the rate for your billing address. The GST/HST number of Maliko Labs Inc. is 752909176RT0001. In an app, the store adds and collects the sales tax that applies, and its receipt shows it.

Section 13 says how cancelling and refunds work for a plan bought in an app.

15. The software and your content

EvenHearth is provided to you as a service. These terms grant no licence to copy, modify or run its software outside the service we provide.

The phone apps are also licensed to you under the terms of the store you install them from: for the iPhone app, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement, and for the Android app, the Google Play Terms of Service. Those terms cover the app on your device; these terms cover the service.

EvenHearth's software, design, name and logo belong to Maliko Labs Inc. Using EvenHearth gives you no right to them beyond using the service.

What you put in stays yours. Your entries, receipt photos and notes remain yours. You give us permission to store, copy, process and show them only as needed to run EvenHearth for you and the people you share them with, and for anything else you separately agree to, as the Privacy Policy describes. That permission lasts as long as we hold them, which section 8 and the Privacy Policy explain. You confirm that you have the right to put them into EvenHearth.

If you send us an idea, a suggestion or a problem report, we may use it to improve EvenHearth without owing you anything for it, apart from a reward announced under section 7.1.

EvenHearth changes over time. We add, change and remove features, and section 11 says what a change can never take away. If we stop offering EvenHearth altogether, we tell you in the app at least 30 days before it closes, export stays open until then, and we refund the unused part of a paid plan bought from us on the web. A plan bought in an app stops renewing, and section 13 says how its store handles a refund.

16. Disclaimers and liability

EvenHearth is provided as-is and as-available. We work to keep it accurate and running, and we do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We do not promise a level of uptime, a response time to a question or a problem report, or that anything described as planned will be built.

evenhearth.dev, the early-access service, is a test environment. It may be reset, and what is in it deleted, at any time; we give notice in the app where we can.

To the fullest extent the law allows, the total liability of Maliko Labs Inc. for all claims arising out of or relating to EvenHearth is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for EvenHearth in the twelve months before the claim and $100 (Canadian).

To the same extent, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, including lost profits or savings, tax penalties or interest, a payment made or missed because of a figure EvenHearth showed, or a disagreement between the people in a household or a venture.

We are not responsible for a delay or failure caused by events beyond our reasonable control, such as a natural disaster, an epidemic, a war, a government order, a widespread failure of power or networks, an outage at a provider we rely on, or an attack that reasonable security would not have stopped. When one happens, we tell you in the app where we can and restore the service as soon as we reasonably can.

EvenHearth works alongside services run by others: the account you choose to sign in with, the payment processor and the app stores that sell plans, and the bank or app you send money with. Their own terms govern them, and we are not responsible for what they do or fail to do.

Claims your use causes. If someone makes a claim against us because you broke these terms or the Acceptable Use Policy, broke the law using EvenHearth, or put a person into a household's records without a reason to (section 2), you cover our reasonable costs of that claim, including reasonable legal fees, to the extent the law where you live allows. You do not cover a claim that our own fault caused.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

17. Changes to these terms

These terms have a version number, and we record which version you accepted and when.

If these terms change in a way that matters, you will be asked once, at your next sign-in, to accept the new version, and you cannot buy a plan until you do. We do not quietly expand what you agreed to.

Two changes were named in advance as material: introducing paid plans (sections 9 to 14), which this version does, and any change to section 11's promise that a plan never gates your records.

Notice of a material change is given in the app, because Guests have no email address and the app reaches everyone.

18. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Disputes belong to the courts of British Columbia.

None of this takes away a right the consumer protection law of the province where you live gives you, including a right to bring a claim there. There is no arbitration clause and no waiver of class proceedings in these terms.

These terms are published in English and in French. If you live in Quebec, the French version is the one that applies to you.

19. Contact

Questions about these terms: support@maliko.ca.

EvenHearth is operated by Maliko Labs Inc., #197, 2-70 Church St, Nanaimo, BC V9R 5H4, Canada. You can also reach us by telephone at +1 (250) 797-4247.

20. How these terms fit together

These terms, with the policies they link to (the Privacy Policy, the Acceptable Use Policy and the refund terms), are the whole agreement between you and us about EvenHearth. A plan bought in an app is also under its store's terms, as section 13 says.

If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, that part applies as far as the law allows and the rest stays in force. If we do not enforce part of these terms straight away, we have not given it up.

We may transfer these terms to a company that takes over EvenHearth. That company is then bound by them, section 11 included, and we tell you in the app. You cannot transfer your Account to someone else.

Sections 1, 6, 8, 15, 16, 18 and this section keep applying after you stop using EvenHearth or your Account is closed.
